Newport State Park’s massive footprint gives you miles of trails and acres of unspoiled Michigan shoreline to enjoy, even at Door County’s busiest. As Wisconsin’s only formally designated wilderness state park, it is far less groomed than other county and state parks. This is part of its charm. Ramble peacefully through the woods, enjoying the occasional exotic stone out-cropping or patch of colorful mushrooms. Sit on the shore and enjoy nothing but the sound of waves and birds. Newport has some magnificent hike-out campsites. Snag them very early in the year (Feb. or March). They are worth the schlepp!
