The Maquoketa Caves are worth the long schlep from Madison. Trails wind up and down rocky cliffs, underground and over bridges in this marvelous state park. On a hot summer day, the cool caves, greenery and streams are particularly nice. While none of the caves are large, they are plentiful. Be sure to check the park’s website before heading out. They do close for bat hibernation and were closed for awhile due to white nose syndrome.
