Because of its close proximity to Madison, many people seem to forget Governor Nelson State Park exists. The largest trail loop is clearly visible from the road, often making it far from peaceful. However, the trails further back are quiet, shady and lovely. In particular the Woodland Trail, with its ancient mounds and rolling hills, is perfect for a summer evening’s walk. Enjoy the sound of crickets, the smell of clover and grass warming in the sun, and see dragonflies darting from tree to tree.
The park also features docks, a beach, a dog beach, fish cleaning station (ooooOOOOooohhhh) and plenty of restrooms. In winter, trails are groomed for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Get into nature without a long drive!
