The informally named Phil’s Woods are named for, and donated by, former Wisconsin governor Phillip LaFollete. Tucked away on an unassuming curve of Dunlop Hollow Road, visitors will need to park on the shoulder. One looping trail first goes up a steep hill to an open corn field. Circle the field to the right for the whole experience. Visitors in late Fall and Winter months may be able to see the overlook view. Most will see corn, leafy trees and the barest blue hint of the hills around Baraboo. Follow the trail back down south for a ferny walk, paralleled by a small gorge covered in moss-covered fallen trees. A short, pleasant and very private little hike.

Lake Farm Park, as it is more commonly known, sits on the western shore of Lake Waubesa. The park is over 300 acres and contains numerous hiking trails, plus is bisected by the Capital City Trail and the Lower Yahara River Trail. There are gorgeous views over the lake, a boat launch, camping and a playground. There are some marshy areas, so be sure to wear bug spray in the summer.

While you’re in the neighborhood, stop by Stella’s bakery for some of their famous hot and spicy cheesy bread, a sticky bun or other treat.

Slightly north of Mt. Horeb, Stewart Lake offers a picnic area, beach and placid lake, created by a small damn. A hiking trail runs first along the lake, then splits, crossing a marsh and a small stream. The shady wooded, and far steeper path, is edged by jumbled rock formations. While parts of the park are edged by housing, minutes down the trail you feel like you are in wilderness.

A very recent addition to Dane County, the Forest is on the outskirts of Mazo. There is one trail that follows a shallow streamlet. The other two trails climb up steep hills to offer gorgeous views of the surrounding countryside. The park feels quite remote but is still a very easy drive from Madison.

Locals call the dog park the “Cherokee Marsh Dog Park,” but the park, which extends far beyond this popular dog park, includes a long hiking trail along the North Side of the Cherokee Marsh. Fed by the Yahara, the river and surrounding marsh reach all the way to Token Creek. Parking for the trail is available in a small lot off the frontage road – Catfish Court. This road is gravel and often ungraded – prepare for a short but bumpy drive. Follow the trail along the west side of the dog park and back into open fields and small wooded copses.
