For those of us who can never resist picking up a shiny rock, shell or polished bit of seaglass, Burnie’s Rock Shop is a utopia. A Madison institution since the 1960s, Burnies offers a wide variety of minerals and gems. Wander amid finished jewelry, beads, exotic minerals, fossils, crystals, and those narrow sliding drawers full of polished stones. There is a second location of more upscale goods on Park. But the original Burnies on Johnson, with its creaking wooden floors, will always be a local favorite for a last minute gift or a rainy-day wander.
