The term “museum” is far too grand for the small gallery of Asmat art, housed on the St. Thomas University campus. The Asmat people are a native community living on New Guinea, an island in the Pacific north of Australia. The few pieces displayed are intriguing and may appear extremely alien to Western eyes. The pieces, mostly carved in wood, show both the every day and the supernatural. Worth a quick visit if you are in the area.
