There is a dearth of good places to eat between Eau Claire and Wisconsin Dells when traveling on highway 90/94. Plenty of nasty chains, of course, and the occasional supper club and bar that does food. But on the whole, keeping going until you find something more appetizing is usually your best bet. So we were delighted to find The Bayou seafood restaurant and seafood shop in New Lisbon. It’s about 10 miles off the highway, but the short trek is worth it.

The new owners, an adorable couple from Texas, serve heaping piles of fresh (not frozen!) seafood, accompanied by cajun homefries (homemade chips) and all the lemon and butter you could want. The crab cakes were particularly excellent.  Be sure to pick up a few extra to take home. As of June, they will also be offering Texas BBQ. The dread drive has just become a lot more pleasant!
